Thanks Norton Media Center!
The NPS Speech and Language Team, including our NMS SLP; Kim Zajac, were awarded a $3,000 grant from the Norton Media Center to support students who struggle with verbal communication. This grant allows for the purchase of additional AAC equipment, technology and training, in order to help our students better express themselves, learn, and connect with others. This grant brings us closer to ensuring every NPS student’s voice is heard!

2nd Annual NMS Police Academy |
|
This summer, our 2nd Annual Police Academy led by SRO Officer Marc Robichaud and NHS SRO Sgt. Jacob Dennett gave students a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and lead. With guidance from instructors Officer Christopher McCarthy and Elementary SRO Rachel Mallioux, student cadets built teamwork skills, tackled technical challenges, and deepened their appreciation for respect, integrity, and leadership. The week was both rewarding and fun an experience that many described as life-changing. We’re already looking ahead to Year 3, with more details to be shared in the spring of 2026!

Curriculum = Welcome to Middle School |
|
Norton Middle School is proud to provide a variety of interscholastic sports opportunities for our students. As we enter the fall season, our school fields competitive teams in Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, and Unified Bocce. We understand that not every student may aspire to join a sports team, but these programs play a vital role in fostering school spirit and pride among our student body. Attending sporting events as a spectator can be an incredibly enjoyable and memorable experience during middle school. It offers a chance to support your school, connect with friends, and soak up the excitement of the games. We kindly remind all of our students to cheer for our teams responsibly and to demonstrate respect towards visiting players and their fans. Our aim is to create a positive and sportsmanlike atmosphere. For your convenience, you can access our sports schedules by following this link. 6-White
The 6th graders have been working hard learning the new middle school routine. They are figuring out their schedules and navigating all that is a day in the life of a middle schooler from lockers, classes, and lunch to specials and ICE. Middle school offers many new opportunities for students to grow as learners and as people. It also challenges students to take on more responsibilities. Everyone is off to a great start so far, and we are excited for a great year ahead!
Welcome Back Bulletin Boards on the 6-White Team
Science Ice Breaker
In Mrs. Down’s Science class, students participated in a “get to know you” ice breaker activity by filling out individual hexagon “atoms” with information about themselves and their interests. Then, the class worked together to combine the atoms by matching shared interests to form a class “molecule.” It was a fun and engaging way for students to get to know their classmates and to learn some physical science concepts too!
 6-White Welcome Back Photo Booth
7 Purple is off to a great start this year, and students have done a great job with this transition.
In Social Studies classes, the students are reviewing important historical and geographical terms and concepts to prepare for their first unit on Ancient India. Students will start studying Ancient India in two weeks. They will begin with India's geography and early culture which includes lessons on the social classes and important holidays like Diwali and Navratri! A lot of fun activities are planned for this year.
In Science classes, students will begin reviewing controls and variables. This is an important concept that is reviewed so students can apply these principles to all labs. Once they have completed that, they will begin to review measurements and formulas. When the beginning of the year review has finished, all classes will move into their first unit- potential and kinetic energy. In this unit, students will learn about the relationship between the two types of energy. They will conclude the unit with a roller coaster activity. Students will use their knowledge of potential and kinetic energy and apply it to a roller coaster. This is always a favorite activity among the students.
English classes have been busy reviewing basic grammar skills and paragraph writing. All students participated in a “book tasting” where they were able to “taste” books from four different genres and select a book they may want to use as their in-class reading book. All students now have their own book to read and upon finishing their book, they will complete a book review. Soon students will begin the Amplify unit on “Poe and Poetry” where they will explore some famous stories written by Edgar Allan Poe.
Math classes created slideshows to get to know each other better and establish a classroom community. Now, they are working on number systems where they will apply their previous knowledge of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Team News:
The teachers on 7White are excited to welcome a new group of students to the unit. This year we have a lot of surprises, field trips, and activities planned to help make 7th grade one of the best years ever!
On September 15 we will begin our first Novel Study of the year. As students begin learning about India & China in Social Studies class, all 7 White students will read Peak by Roland Smith. Peak is the story of a boy who must summit Mt. Everest before his 15th birthday in order to save his father’s climbing business, Peak Adventures. We look forward to welcoming families to our unit on September 25th on Meet the Teachers Night.
Math:
Mr. Beard’s Grade 7 Math class is up and running for the 2025-2026 school year and students in his classroom are seemingly very excited to learn! The first full week of school in Mr. Beard’s class boasts much more than simply passing out books and getting-to-know-you activities! Students are already revisiting the concepts of absolute value as well as adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers using Mr. Beard’s trademark technique called “the Ping Pong Ball Method.” To enforce these important concepts, Mr. Beard promises that his students will soon play their first math game of the year (to prepare for their first Grade 7 Math quiz), which is a popular students-vs.-teacher competition entitled “Mystery Guest in the Envelope.”
Science:
Students in Mr. Cembalisty's Grade 7 Science class started their year by making a lab coat craft in which they noted some highlights of their summer and listed both personal and academic goals they have for the school year. After taking time to establish clear classroom expectations and previewing our year, we will begin our studies with how to identify variables in scientific investigation, followed by reviewing units of measurement. We look forward to our first major unit studying the energy of movement and culminating with our Roller Coaster Engineering Project- a 7White favorite!
Social Studies:
In Mrs. Gonet’s class will begin the year with a little “Review and Refresh Sesh” as we take some time to review important concepts and vocabulary terms from Ancient Civilizations I in 6th grade. In Ancient Civilizations II students will be using similar resources as they learn about new cultures and civilizations- India, China, Japan, Korea, Oceania, Greece, and Rome! This class is “project based” so students can look forward to a lot of hands-on activities and projects throughout the year.
ELA:
Students on 7 White have begun their short story unit this week, in which they will read different stories, written by famous authors such as Langston Hughes, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, and O’Henry; to name a few. They will also learn a variety of literary terms that they will learn to both identify and apply to these stories. In addition, students will encounter many different characters, and at the conclusion of the unit, they will choose a character to analyze, in their very first seventh grade five paragraph essay. We are excited to see what the kids can do!
8 Purple is off to a fantastic start! We have many engaging activities and field trips planned this year. Students are doing a great job of learning new routines, and teachers are starting to dive into content.
In math, students enjoyed working together on challenging puzzles the first few days. Our first unit is the number system, with students exploring rational and irrational numbers.
After learning about symbolism in the U.S. flag, civics students made emblems to represent themselves. Our first unit includes the requirements for citizenship, the process for becoming a citizen, the purpose of our government, and how taxes are used.
In ELA, students are practicing the three principles of our Amplify curriculum (your brain is a muscle, be brave and curious, and respect). Our first unit, Perspectives & Narratives will give students opportunities to read complex texts, help students understand different viewpoints, and practice using narrative techniques to effectively convey their own meaning and perspective.
Just as professional scientists do, our students are working on making effective claims, using sound evidence to support claims, and providing reasoning to explain how evidence supports a claim.. We will be exploring Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion in our physics unit.
Team 8 White students started with an exciting first week of school.
In Math classes students enjoyed working with puzzles to build collaboration skills. Each group discovered a few pieces that belonged to other puzzles and had to work with other groups to put everything together. Later students sharpened their integer operations with
playing cards.
On Friday, Ms. Jenkins’ civics classes kicked off current events Jeopardy. Staying informed is one of the most important jobs of a citizen so every Friday students learn about important current events happening in Massachusetts, the government, and internationally. Students practiced civic responsibility by working in groups cooperatively! Great job everyone!
But some students reported that the most exciting thing about 8th grade is that
“You don’t have to go up any stairs!”
